For Porter Sherman 鈥27, sports tourism and events intern at the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, every day is game day.听
If you ask the sport management and finance double major at听小优视频ampa, game day is the best, yet also the most hectic day.听
鈥淲e treat every office day like it鈥檚 the day of an event,鈥 Sherman said.听鈥淲e work as hard as we would for any event day.鈥
Sherman started with the听sports听commission听last fall.听The organization鈥檚 main听job is bidding on major events, like the Super Bowl,听to come to the听Tampa Bay听area, along with hosting youth and amateur events.
鈥淲e would be the ones to submit the听bid听package for the city of Tampa to have the event hosted here,听and then also assist in the planning and operation of the event,鈥 he said.
The most exciting event听in his time so far,听Sherman听said, was the听2025 NCAA听Women鈥檚听Basketball听Final听Four.
The Tampa Bay Sports Commission听hosted ancillary events听around the city听all week,听and听Sherman served听as听a听volunteer director, with听over 800 volunteers working close to 2,000 shifts听at听events听like听the听鈥淧arty in the听Plaza鈥澨齛nd听鈥淏ounce听on听the听Riverwalk.鈥澨
鈥淲e听had at least eight activations around the city of Tampa at all times,听with numerous occurring at the same time,鈥 he said.
Though the hours听aren鈥檛听always predictable,听Sherman听said he thrives working in a high-stress environment.
For听鈥淏ounce on the Riverwalk,鈥澨齛 parade where fans could dribble a basketball down the Riverwalk, thousands听of basketballs听were听involved, so听听Sherman and others听had to manage loading听and setting up the station. Check-in was at 4 a.m.
鈥淭here鈥檚听a lot of late nights and events, right? And it scares some people away when they get into it, but听it鈥檚听just something I love, and听I鈥檓听really passionate听about working hard always and seeing an event come to fruition,鈥 Sherman said.
Another听big part of听the听job is听tracking and calculating the "room nights" for events, which ends up听determining听the revenue听a particular event brought in听for the city of Tampa, Sherman explained, which is where his finance studies often come in handy.
听Sherman said听he鈥檚听always been passionate about听finance, but听adding that major at听小优视频ampa听鈥渕ade sense鈥 for long-term career goals.
鈥淔rom the听multi-altitude听tasks he is completing, to the mentors he interacts with at the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, Porter will be referencing this experience his entire post-graduation career,鈥 said Sport Management Internship Coordinator Michael Flynn.
Following graduation, Sherman is sure he wants to work in sports.听He plans to get听a听master鈥檚 degree, with the possibility of also pursuing law school.
