Environmental Studies Hosts Third Annual Fishing Tournament

小优视频 will host a children鈥檚 fishing tournament on Sunday,听Oct. 26,听at听8:30听a.m.,听run听by听Associate Professor听of Environmental Studies Bridgette听Froeschke鈥檚听Spatial听Ecology听Lab.听The听free听event will take place on the west side of the Hillsborough River between听the听Cass听Building and Plant Park.

The tournament, titled the ICK Fishing Tournament (Invasive and Cichlid Kid Fishing Tournament), will听teach听youth ages听5-15 about the role of invasive species in听the community.听Around 50 children will participate in activities across five stations:听two stations for rod-and-reel fishing along the river;听one station for using minnow traps to catch invasive fish in Plant Creek;听one station for educational games;听and one station that will lead听to听a scavenger hunt to discover invasive animals around the campus.听

Prizes donated by local stakeholders will be awarded to those who catch the highest variety of invasive fish, the highest quantity of invasive听fish,听and the invasive fish with the largest size.

鈥淚 created the ICK Fishing Tournament鈥痶o give kids a fun and free way to learn about marine science and conservation. I wanted to show them that science听isn鈥檛听just something done in a lab; it can happen right here in Tampa Bay,鈥澨鼺roeschke听said. 鈥淭hrough hands-on fishing and real sampling techniques, participants learn about invasive fish species and the听important role听they can play in protecting our local waters. My goal each year is to spark curiosity, build confidence and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.鈥
