Greek Week听Totaled Major Funds and Major Fun

Last Saturday, the annual Greek Week fundraising event听raised听$132,618.89 for the Mercy Full Project,听a local animal rescue organization.听

From Feb. 15-21, students in fraternities and sororities threw pies at each other,听decorated the sidewalks with elaborate chalk art, played classic听games like tug of war and relay racing, and donned giant bubble suits for a sumo-style soccer game, all in the name of philanthropy.听

Junior Luke Kelley,听president of the Interfraternity council,听said听the week is a highlight of the Greek community that听participants look forward to every year.听Kelley was the host of the Greek Variety Show, the final event of the week that is often the most popular. Held in Falk Theatre听in front of听a听sold-out听crowd, teams听performed original numbers听complete with choreography and matching outfits.听

Participants in听the听week鈥檚 activities included听members from all three Greek councils on campus,听the IFC, the Panhellenic听Association, which oversees the sororities,听and the听Unified Greek Council, which consists of historically Black and multicultural houses but is inclusive to all.听

Phi Kappa Phi Inducts New Class

On Sunday, 61听students were inducted into the University鈥檚 chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation鈥檚 oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society.听

To be eligible听for membership, seniors must rank in the top 10% of their class within their college, and juniors are drawn from the top 7.5%.听Graduate and professional students who have completed at least one year听of study听and rank in the top 10%听of their cohort are also eligible. Faculty, administrators, professional听staff听and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction may also be invited to membership.

Provost听Mike Stephenson presented each inductee with听a听medal.

Members have access to extensive national resources through Phi Kappa Phi, including scholarships,听grants听and professional development opportunities, said chapter President, Kathryn Branch,听associate听dean for the College of Social Sciences, Mathematics and Education听and professor听of criminology and听criminal听justice.

鈥淥ur听goal is to foster interdisciplinary relationships across colleges and create a network of scholars who support one another long after graduation,鈥澨鼴ranch听said, also noting that this year marks the听小优视频ampa听Phi Kappa Phi chapter鈥檚 15th听anniversary.
