Bovin's academic interests are in instrumental conducting, wind band rehearsal techniques, and the pedagogy of music education. Bovin's research is primarily on the topic of the intersection of gender and sexuality in music education, with her main focus being the experience of band directors who identify as female. To date, Bovin's research on female band directors has included over 2000 participants representing all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand.
Amy J. Bovin is a nationally and internationally recognized and awarded music educator who is a frequent guest conductor, clinician, and presenter at schools, universities, workshops, and conferences around the globe. Previously, Bovin was the Interim Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Javelina Marching Band at Texas A&M, Kingsville. During her time in K-12 education, she was the Director of Bands at high schools in Ridgefield, Bristol, and Greenwich, Connecticut, and worked with bands across the state of Utah and Florida.
Bovin's research activity includes a study regarding the effects of a web-based sight-reading program on students' music notational literacy, the experiences of band directors who identify as female, and the effects of Covid on long-term enrollment in band. Recent publications that will be available in the coming months include "Transforming Music Education: A Call to End Sexism and Foster Gender Equality" (sole author) in the Journal TOPICS, 鈥淭he State of Music Programs Amid Enrollment Shifts鈥 (co-written) in 听Arts Education Policy Review, and a co-written chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Queer and Gender Studies in Music Education called "The State of the Podium for Female Band Directors". She also recently published a book that is available on Amazon called "The Power Within Her: A Workbook for Reclaiming Your Voice, Energy, and Power" which is a practical application of the data she gathered through her research on female-identifying band directors. 听
Bovin is the current Florida State Chair and Chapter President of Women Band Directors International, a clinician for Pinellas County Schools and Tarpon Springs Leadership Conservatory for the Arts, an adjudicator for OrlandoFest, Varsity Sports, and other various music competitions and events throughout the country, staff for the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, and an editorial board member for Philosophy of Music Journal. Prior positions include All State Band Chair, President Elect, President, and Past President of Connecticut Music Educators Association, the Connecticut State affiliate of the National Association for Music Education, Connecticut State Chair of Women Band Directors International, and chapter, district, and national officers of Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Band Sorority, Inc.听
